Based on the renders, it looks like AMD will be switching to using a Land Grid Array (LGA) layout, rather than continue with the Pin Grid Array (PGA) layout it has been using for its consumer-level CPU for the past several years. These renders also reflect a continuity of an earlier rumour – also posted by ExecutableFix – that AMD already plans on shifting away from PGA to an LGA 1718 layout. As you all know, this isn’t the first time AMD has considered moving away from PGA to LGA; its HEDT Ryzen Threadripper CPUs are all LGA-based CPUs, which is actually a sensible thing to do. With an LGA-based CPU, the chances of damaging it is far less and a PGA-made CPU, simply because the pins on the corresponding motherboard is considerably easier and cheaper to replace if they get damaged.
