According to market analyst company Canalys, the Chinese tech giant surpassed its Korean rival by shipping 55.8 million devices, compared to the latter’s 53.7 million. This also marks the first time the top spot has been taken by any company that isn’t Samsung or Apple. Huawei also overtook Apple in smartphone sales for the first time back in 2018.
Due to its longstanding situation with the US, Huawei has not been able to sell as many of its phones outside of its home country. But inside China, on the other hand, the company has been shipping a lot of phones. So much so that 70% of its phones were sold within China. This is also partly contributed by the fact that China was the earliest to be hit by, and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. But Canalyst says this lead will not be one that Huawei holds for long. This is especially so, as other regions in the EU (European Union) have become more wary about the brand’s hardware. Sales of Samsung and Apple may also start to recover as the global economy recovers. (Source: Canalyst)
