Specifically, the court alleges that some owners of the two aforementioned systems had reported consistent problems with “dark smudges on their screens”. An issue that seemed to be consistent with iMac displays lacking a dust filter. To add insult to injury, when iMac owners reached out to Apple over the issue, the company simply refused to acknowledge the problem as a defect on their part. Instead, the brand simply told the affected owners that they would have to pay upwards of US$500 (~RM2092) in order to get the display “fixed”.
For context; most computer systems are designed with both intake and exhaust vents. Intake vents are usually fitted with a dust filter that prevents dust particles from entering the system. Without it, dust can easily accumulate within the system, which in turn can lead to the systems overheating and having their performance throttled. Current Apple iMac models are also often used by professionals working in the creative and photography space. Primarily because of the colour accuracy afforded by its Retina displays. So, having dark smudges building up beneath the machine’s display does actually affect how an image looks on it.
