It added that the clearance between the display and keyboard on MacBooks are designed to be very tight tolerances. Meaning that with a webcam cover present, an awkward gap in between the two parts will be made apparent and would risk the laptop’s display to bend towards the keyboard if not handled properly, thus resulting it to crack. Moreover, some covers would also interfere with the device’s ambient light sensor. This would cause features such as automatic brightness and True Tone from working properly as well.
Due to concerns on privacy and the risk of getting attacked remotely by hackers, a good number of laptop users have resorted to acquiring these webcam covers to prevent such threats. However, Apple assured that the webcam on its MacBook devices are engineered so that its indicator light will turn on whenever the camera is activated in order to keep users aware. Additionally, the company also advised users to also determine what apps are allowed access to the camera via System Preferences for added security. For those insisting on using a webcam cover, Apple recommends using one that is not thicker than 0.1mm and does not leave adhesive residue. (Source: Apple via MacRumors)
