According to the trailer, Black Ops: Cold War takes place during the 1980s of the Cold War era. In regard to the timeline in-game, the title occurs a few years before the events of Black Ops II and several years after the events of the first Black Ops title. The game’s main story campaign seemingly puts you in the shoes of newcomer and CIA Operative Russell Adler, who is hot pursuit of an alleged Soviet spy called Perseus. The main reason being that Perseus in on the path to tip the scales of power from the US over towards the Soviet Union. Like most previous Black Ops titles, the premise of Black Ops: Cold War and Perseus is based on an actual conspiracy that allegedly took place during the period, along with the deniable operations conducted by the US’ Special Operations Group (SOG) to counter it at the time. For context, Perseus was the code name of a spy that was allegedly present at several top-secret facilities in the US. Including the Los Alamos and White Sands Missile Range at New Mexico.

Considering the timeline, fans of the franchise may be happy to see familiar faces of the series, chief among which being Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and the game’s original CIA “Spook”, Jason Hudson. And of course, it just wouldn’t be a Black Ops game without the appearance of a US President in-game; in this case, the presiding US President at the time was Ronald Reagan. Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War is slated to launch on 13 November this year, and will be available on the PC, PlayStation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
