Powered by the Huawei’s own flagship-level chip, Kirin 980, the Mate X receives its 5G capability via the Balong 5000 5G modem which is also developed by the company itself. It comes standard with 8GB of RAM and 512GB internal storage which can be expended through NM Card which Huawei introduced during the launch of the Mate 20 series a few months ago.

Built with an OLED panel, Huawei stated that the Mate X’s screen has a measurement of 8-inch when unfolded while the device offers 6.6-inch on the front and 6.38-inch on the back when it is in the folded position. Each mode also leads to different screen resolution at 2480 x 2200, 2480 x 1148, and 2480 x 892 respectively. Just like the Mate 20 series, the Mate X comes with a triple camera system that Huawei co-developed with Leica which includes a 40MP wide-angle camera, 16MP ultra-wide angle, and 8MP telephoto cameras. There is no selfie camera on Mate X since its unique form factor allows users to snap selfies using the device’s triple camera system. The Mate X is also powered by a dual battery pack which provides a total battery capacity of 4500mAh to the device. It also supports the equally new 55W Huawei SuperCharge tech which allows the battery to be charged from 0% to 85% in 30 minutes.

Being a 5G device, its availability status very much depending on the 5G network rollout of each operator. Nevertheless, Huawei stated that the general release of Mate X will be around the middle of 2019. Price-wise, the Mate X will be available for EU 2299 which translates to about RM 10,626. A hefty price tag indeed but nevertheless, the CEO of Huawei, Richard Yu quick to point out that the Mate X represents a new technology and the company is working to bring the price point down for future products.
