However, the unveiling was only presented as a teaser, therefore no further details of its specifications or potential variants were mentioned during the event. Huawei CEO Richard Yu says the new P50 series will be ultra-thin and lightweight, and would also feature an “iconic design language”. The new line-up is also said to be capable of “[lifting] mobile photography to a new level”.

The short reveal video only showcased the phone’s rear design – something that we’re quite familiar with, thanks to the corroborating leaks that were shared by multiple sources ahead of its official unveiling. Present are the two massive glass-covered circular camera bumps on the P50’s back. The top bump is shown to house three unspecified cameras, while the bottom appears to feature a periscope-style telephoto lens and also what might be a ToF sensor. Leica’s branding can also be seen underneath the dual circular camera bumps, and the rear panel itself is presented with a reflective and glassy gold finish.

As for the P50 series’ front design, the aforementioned leaks suggests the standard variant will feature a 6.3-inch flat display, while the Pro model comes with a larger 6.6-inch curved panel. Both models are said to feature a top-centered cutout for the on-screen selfie camera. The one showcased in the teaser looks like it could be the Pro variant, as the curved screen can partially be seen. So when is Huawei expected to officially launch the new flagship smartphone series? Unfortunately, Richard Yu said the company has yet to determine that. He also revealed that the phone was intended to launch in spring, but has been delayed until further notice due to “reasons that [we] are aware of”. We’re very certain that he’s referencing the ongoing US sanctions and shortage of components, which have hindered Huawei’s production lines – especially in the smartphone category.
