Suffice to say, the P620 is a compact powerhouse which slots in between Lenovo’s single-slot P520 and dual-slot P720 workstation offerings. On top of the aforementioned core numbers and speed capability, the AMD Threadripper Pro that comes with the machine supports up to 128 lanes of PCIe 4.0 bandwidth, and 8-channel memory of up to 1TB of DDR4 3200MHz via eight DIMM slots. Lenovo claims that the 64-core processor is capable of delivering 20-percent more performance when compared to Intel-based dual CPU workstations.
Storage-wise, the workstation offers up to 4TB of M.2 PCIe SSD and up to 16TB of 3.5-inch SATA 7,200rpm HDDs, with support for RAID 0/1 for M.2 and 0/1/5/10 for SATA. The machine is capable of supporting up to two NVIDIA Quadro RTX8000 or four Quadro RTX 4000 cards, and could power up to sixteen displays with up to a 96GB frame buffer. The new Lenovo workstation is packaged in a 33 liter tower chassis with air-cooling capability. The company has worked together with AMD to produce a new channel cooling system in the chassis, as well as a custom heat-sink for the Threadripper. Both companies claim that with this way, it can avoid relying on liquid-cooling which is commonly found on high-end consumer Threadripper machines.
In terms of connectivity, the front panel of the ThinkStation P620 consists of four USB ports (two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 and two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2) and a mic/headphone combo jack. On its back are four USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, two USB-A 2.0, a PS/2 port, a RJ-45 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Audio Line-In and Out ports, and Microphone-In. Also included is a 15-in-1 media card reader included. Powering the machine is a 1,000W PSU. The Lenovo ThinkStation P620 will ship globally by September 2020. its pricing has not been announced by the company just yet, but will likely depend on the final hardware included with the machine. On another note, Lenovo said that the P620 will not feature Thunderbolt support at launch. However, they added that it will add it to the machine post launch in the beginning of 2021.
