While there were indeed some improvements for mobile download speed in Malaysia but it is quite minuscule in general. When you compare the data from Q3-Q4 2019 to the same quarter in 2020, the difference was just 2.41Mbps since the average download speed within Q3-Q4 2020 in Malaysia was listed as 24.53Mbps. In terms of Southeast Asia’s ranking for mobile download speed, Malaysia remained firmly in fourth place just like in 2019. Our market is significantly behind Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore with speed differences of between 8.61Mbps to 44.33Mbps. Speaking about ranking, Malaysia’s position within the region’s fixed broadband ranking for 2020 for download speed also remained the same as in 2019 at third place. Despite that, the improvement between Q3-Q4 2019 and 2020 was much significant at around 15Mbps given that the average download speed in Malaysia during the period of Q3-Q4 2020 was said to be 90.88Mbps.
However, the chart showed barely any improvements for Malaysia when it comes to uploading speed. Vietnam has since taken overpassed Malaysia with a noticeable margin although the exact figures were not stated by Ookla in the report. Even though there were no significant improvements in terms of mobile speed for Malaysia, Ookla seemed to be confident that things will become much better once 5G begun to be commercially available in Malaysia later this year.
