According to the company, users will be able to expand the aforementioned phones’ RAM capacity by converting a designated amount of the onboard storage memory (ROM). For example, the RAM on the Reno5 and A74 series can be boosted up to 7GB and 5GB respectively. Although, keep in mind that RAM storage capacity on all of the listed smartphones varies from one model to another.
To find the feature after installing the update, navigate to the About Phone page under Settings, tap on RAM, enable the RAM Expansion option, and then finally select the desired memory allocation. OPPO noted that users are given three adjustment levels for memory expansion via the new utility. In addition, a new option of displaying RAM usage details when running apps will also be introduced in the new update, which users can view in the “Recent Task” screen. The new update is now available for both the 4G and 5G variants of the A74, while the Reno5 4G and F models are slated to receive the new firmware rollouts later this month. Users of the Pro 5G version, on the other hand, will have to wait until July before they can try out this new utility. The brand did not mention if it is planning to introduce the feature to its other smartphones. On a related note, OPPO’s fellow BBK Electronics-owned smartphone manufacturer Vivo had already debuted its own RAM Expansion feature on its new V21 series in April. Seeing that both brands are under the same parent company, it’s very likely that the utility is a product from the same development team. Meanwhile, rival company Xiaomi might also introduce a similar feature to its future smartphones soon, according to a leak that we have reported previously. (Source: OPPO Malaysia press release)
