ORIGINAL STORY (2:53 PM): Radiation leak has been discovered at the Pos Aviation terminal in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) earlier today. According to the report by Bernama, the leak has been confirmed by the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM). The report further stated that all Pos Aviation staff were asked to evacuate the premise at around 11 AM as instructed by the KLIA’s Fire and Rescue Service. Due to the leakage, Pos Aviation has also suspended all activities at the premise until further notice.

However, no further information regarding the radiation leak has been released at the moment. Given the fact that Pos Aviation handles cargo as well as e-commerce packages that goes in and out of KLIA, it is not far-fetched to say this news might be a concern to those who are expecting their oversea packages to arrive this week. (Source: Bernama – 1, 2, 3) UPDATE (10:54 PM): The radiation leak incident at Pos Aviation terminal in KLIA turned out to be a false alarm after a further investigation was done by JBPM and the Atomic Agency Licensing Board, according to a follow-up report by Bernama. As the story goes, three staff members of Pos Aviation has noticed wet patches on the bottom part of a box which contains iridium-192 solid metal that is meant for medical purposes. Prior to that, the box was already placed inside the Dangerous Goods Room after Pos Aviation’s staff has noticed that the box is already dented when it arrived at KLIA. Not long after JBPM was alerted, two fire engines from KLIA Fire and Rescue Station together with Hazardous Materials Management Unit (Hazmat) team arrived at the location. The Pos Aviation’s premise was then evacuated and operations were suspended until authorities deemed that it is safe from radioactive leaks at around 3:30 PM. (Source: Bernama.)
