Just earlier today, Samsung revealed that the new devices which are going to be launched on 9 February are the first batch of Galaxy products that contained repurposed plastics. Specifically, the material is made from old plastic waste that were discarded into the ocean. [Image: Samsung.]Samsung pointed out that the origin of the plastics that the company has repurposed for its upcoming devices are not just discarded water bottles and grocery bags but also involved fishing nets. According to a report released in 2009 [pdf], the United Nations has deemed abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gears as a growing concern due to their negative impact on the environment and economy. Meanwhile, Samsung’s intention to use recycled material for its mobile products is not something new though. Back in August last year, the company has listed it as one of several sustainable practices that Samsung aims to implement by 2025, in addition to cutting down the standby power consumption of phone chargers, the use of plastics in mobile packaging, and e-waste.
